Allow Me To Reintroduce Myself

Allow Me To Reintroduce Myself

My name is Darryl Callens and I’ve been teaching high school computer science for four years.

I had to revise my original introduction video blog so I decided to scratch the original video and create new content.  When I realized that would be a task of mines, I also thought about how I’ll have an opportunity to see growth in my blog posts.   My original introduction did exactly what was asked and I introduced myself effectively.   But that’s about all it did.

There wasn’t much more to it than that.  No cool effects!  No animated text!  No transitioning or edits!   Everything is different now!   My video is much more interactive and fun than the original.   I’m excited that I’m learning new methods of delivering quality content.   Yes, my video follows the guidelines for video texts discussed in Argument in the Real World?   And yes, I’ve realized how to make a complete video text by implementing more technology tools.

“Ken Burns, the note documentary filmmaker, has noted that “all story is manipulation.  Is there acceptable manipulation?  You bet.’ (2012). He uses a variety of techniques, including panning and zooming on still images as well as the narrator’s voice, additional interviews, and dramatic music to create certain effect” (Turner & Hicks, 2017).

I wanted to make sure that I was using a variety of these techniques mentioned in the Argument in the Real World?   As you can see in my new video, there is panning and zooming, as well as narrator voice effects.  And one of my favorite things to add to my content was the dramatic music and music in general to help engage the audience.

I consciously used the most methods that were deemed effective for video arguments for my reintroduction.  When audio is supported with text it increases content retention and highlighting key actions or words also brings forth an engaging element.  These additions should make for a great visual!  I’ll let you be the judge of that!

  1. Hello, Darryl! You did an amazing job on your video! Your reintroduction is a prime example of "the power of visual media", since it uses a combination of "pictures...narration and music...to make an immediate, and important, effect on viewers" (Turner & Hicks, 2017, p. 89). The "craft elements" that went into the creation of your video work together to capture viewers' attention and convey a clear message about your digital writing philosophy (Turner & Hicks, 2017, p. 85).

  3. Hi Darryl,
I enjoyed your new video submission. It was very upbeat and showed lots of different ways to enhance the video. I am excited to be learning about this because it is an amazing modality for teaching because we can use it to build background and enrich the knowledge of students(Alber, 2019), but an even greater feat is to require it of the students. According to Turner & Hicks (2017), "the opportunities to use video as a medium for argument expands exponentially," in reference to the slew of programs and platforms that students can use to create videos, slide shows, and other kinds of media. Students must know the material in order to create something - which makes a great argument as to why we should use video in our classrooms for more than just building background.
